Not all street children find it possible to live in our Center, for the discipline and the time-table are not easy. Some come for a few weeks, decide that it is too difficult for them, and then leave. However, those who do stay show rapid improvement in attitude and behaviour through individual and group counseling, and in their daily interactions with social workers, teachers, and other adults committed to meeting their emotional, intellectual, and physical needs.
Over the course of the 3 to 4 years that the boys spend at Child in the Sun, they receive a basic education in Kiswahili, English, mathematics, and business administration. We offer them vocational training in animal husbandry, agriculture, and carpentry. We also encourage creative expression and athletic discipline by offering them opportunities to learn and perform traditional music and dance, to play football, and to participate in dramatic productions.
From Mbezi an average of 35 children have been reunited with their families annually during the last four years. This includes the children who have been reunited to their families before completing the programme as well as those who returned home after completion.
