Our target group is street boys, especially those who live away from their respective families, depending upon their labour to earn a living in streets. Normally they would have dropped-out of school or never been to school at all. At present we have two centres one at Manzese, which is a Drop in Center and another, is at Mbezi-Makabe, which is the main center. We are able to give assistance directly to 25 and 80 children through Manzese and Mbezi centres respectively. We also teach vocational skill training for 90 street youth who are our part-time beneficiaries under the Day Care Program. We are also able to give assistance to about 10 children indirectly through our networking with other centres like Kuleana in Mwanza, Dogodogo, Youth Cultural and Information Centre (YCIC) Centres in Dar Es Salaam and watoto foundation Arusha. The Children come from all the Regions and tribes of Tanzania.
i ) We select children living in the streets of Dar es Salaam, with no parents or relatives to take care of them, and whose physical, mental or social development is at risk. We therefore do not accept children brought to us by individuals and families, unless we have reason to believe that the future, education and development of the child are at risk.
ii ) The age of the children accepted in Child in the Sun shall be around 12 to 17 years. Their stay at our center depends on the age. Children belonging to the age group of 12 to 15 stay for about 3 to 4 years and children between 15 and 17 stay for about 1 to 2 years. At the end of their prescribed years boys who are above 18 years old should be prepared to leave the centre as independent young adults. They should be prepared for a life of self-reliance, with the minimum amount of support from their families. In case if the relationship is built between the boy and his family and he feels strongly a need to go back home, he is assisted to do so before the end of the program.
